A good entry from club runners and helpers at Baxters' Loch Ness Festival oF Running, undoubtedly topped by LUKE SHAW - 1st Runner Home in the Baxters' 5k in a sub 17minute time. Lukes' victory comes the day after he was a close second in his first cross-country outing in a black n red vest at Lochaber.
Luke was so fast , mum only managed a snap of Luke's back as she was "...so amazed that I didn't get any photos apart from the back of Luke as he whizzed past!!" However, there are some post run photos in the Photoalbum and on the Baxters Festival Of Running website, bib number 9129.
Here's Luke's experience in his own words
"The start was very difficult - trying to get to the front was in itself a battle then as the klaxon went off it was a case of dodging the kids and the basket balls! Running hard at the start to get to the front then overtaking the front runner within the first 800m. It was hard paced to stay in front up until the bridge where I was overtaken but managed to get back in front after about 50m and stayed there until the last 300+ metres where I was overtaken again. I left him for 100m and then realised as a marshal encouraged me to "push it" that I was really close to the finish. I then started to sprint as fast as I could with all I had left and overtook him - I was worried at this point that he would try again and that I wouldn't be able to keep the pace up. I slowed a little with 50m to go but kept up a good sprint (for me!) and 2m away from finish I looked up at the time 16.55 as I crossed the line! I hoped that It would be possible to do it in this time but never believed that I could."
